The Art Center is a busy place! We rely on volunteers for everything from unlocking the doors and welcoming visitors to hanging art and organizing the kitchen. We encourage all of our active members to give at least 3 hours per month as a docent. What’s a docent? The technical definition is someone who welcomes visitors and gives guided tours through a museum or gallery. In our case a docent is that, and a little bit more!

Shenandoah Valley Art Center docents open the doors and turn the lights on in the morning, and close the building up in the afternoon. They also welcome visitors, answer the phones, and help customers in the shop. Sometimes there is a special mailing project or tidying up to do. There is often time for you to read, draw, write letters, or whatever else you enjoy. Some days and weeks are busier than others. If you let us know your preference we can help you select.

Docents are needed Tuesday– Saturday each week and the shifts are 10am-1pm and 1pm-4pm.

We are very much in need of Saturday docents– it is the hardest day to fill. There is no staff here on those days, so it is extra important that the shifts get filled up. Please note that Saturday morning docents are asked to come in 15 minutes early on days when children’s classes are in session to help take payments.

You can get trained in two ways:

Make an appointment with SVAC staff to come in and get trained.

Just sign up for a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday shift. We will train you on the day of.

Volunteering at SVAC is the best way to get to know the organization and your fellow artists. It’s a great place to meet people and build connections with other artists in the community.
